What is the Writing Center?

Writing for the sake of writing

At the Writing Center, we see the individual writing assignment as an opportunity to help you improve both the draft you are working on and your future writing. We see improving the individual grade not as the end in itself, but as a by-product of improving your writing process.

Something for everyone who writes

Our tutors offer a wide range of help for writers with varying skills and abilities. While we do offer basic help and encourage struggling writers to come in, we also offer assistance for experienced writers. We believe that all writers benefit from discussing their ideas with others and that successful writers seldom turn anything in without sharing it with someone first.

A community of interested writers

At the Center, you have the opportunity to talk to other writers about your ideas. Our tutors can read your paper and offer opinions and advice about how to improve it. They can also listen to your ideas about the assignment and help you to clarify your thinking before you start writing or early in your writing process. The tutors offer assistance with all aspects of writing, including brainstorming, organization, thesis, style, wording, and revision.

Teaching, not proofreading

Writing Center tutors do not proofread, but they will help you learn to revise and edit your own work. They will also answer specific questions about any problems you are having with your writing, including grammatical issues.

A little preparation on your part will help you get the most out of your visit to the Writing Center
