Noelle Giguere One of the most important “aha” moments in Noelle’s undergraduate career was when a writing tutor handed her a copy of Anne Lamott’s essay, “Sh**ty First Drafts.”As simple as it was, the idea that unsightly first drafts can lead to great (and even excellent) papers helped her become a better writer. Her tutoring style is defined by the belief that when writing is treated as a process, good papers are inevitably the result. As a tutor, her goals are to help students identify what they do well and what they can improve in their writing as well as aid students through the process of developing, structuring, and arguing their ideas in academic papers. Currently a PhD candidate in French literature at Emory, Noelle received her BA in English and French from Smith College. Her dissertation focuses on works by the 20th and 21st century authors Marguerite Duras and Hélène Cixous, specifically how problems of vision discussed in their texts are directly linked to the descriptions of faces that weave in and out of the narratives. Through an examination of the place of film, photography, and painting in these authors’ works, her dissertation shows that the simultaneous desire and failure to see faces and create faces in the literary text drives the act of writing for each author. Noelle’s doctoral work reflects her interests in 20th century French literature, visual studies, and women’s writing, but she has also published papers on postcolonial theory and topics in 19th century French literature. Even though her own work focuses on textual analysis, she is thrilled to work with students from different disciplines and on diverse paper topics at the Emory Writing Center.
