Personal Statement Support

During the past application season alone, the Writing Center helped nearly 200 students find just the right words for their personal statement. Whether applying for admission to medical, law, or graduate school or competing for scholarships or special programs, students have looked to the Writing Center for help with the topic, diction, and organization of their application essays.

During 30-minute or one-hour sessions, applicants can work with either graduate tutors or undergraduate peer tutors to brainstorm or polish a personal statement. Graduate students bring a wealth of knowlege about writing toward advanced study, grants, and fellowships, and our undergraduate staff also boasts a number of scholarships, study abroad trips, and awards for which they wrote successful personal statements.

While we are not a drive-thru editing service, our tutors can help applicants identify repeated sentence-level issues and develop self-editing strategies.  Our model is simple: tutors read at the beginning of the session while writers reflect on their statement and, for the rest of the session, the two engage in a focused conversation about the application essay that is as laid-back or as high-energy as the writer prefers.

As a special request, we ask that students seeking help with personal statements respect our busy times, particularly mid-terms and finals when other students need help with papers, by minimizing the number of appointments to 1-2.
