The introduction is important because it is the door through which the reader enters your paper.
 

The Role of the Introduction:

An introduction may be one paragraph or several; think about it in terms of the introductory section of your essay.

The introduction should fulfill several goals:

1. gain the reader's interest [hook]
2. communicate the topic of the essay
3. communicate the point or thesis of the essay
4. give the reader a sense of the structure of the essay [format]

3. background information that helps readers see your perspective

7. a statement that challenges readers' beliefs
