The Emory Writing Center (EWC) Graduate Fellowship Guidelines For the 2009-2010 Fellowship Year

Applications due Wednesday, February 4, 2009, by 4:00 p.m.

Information Session:
Wednesday, January 21, 3-4 pm, N212 Callaway Center

With joint funding from the Graduate School and the Dean’s Office of Emory College, the Emory Writing Center will award four graduate fellowships in 2009-2010 to advanced graduate students in any discipline. EWC Fellows work 15 hours per week in the Writing Center from mid-August through mid-May and receive a stipend of at least $16,500, along with the Graduate School’s health insurance subsidy for the academic year.

EWC Fellows’ responsibilities include tutoring in the Writing Center; mentoring undergraduate peer tutors; conducting training sessions, staff meetings, and workshops on writing issues; identifying and designing writing resources; and promoting use of the Writing Center. Fellows may also have opportunities to participate in research projects and attend professional conferences. Apart from their duties in the Writing Center, fellows are expected to devote full time to the research and writing of their dissertations and should not be otherwise employed while holding an EWC Fellowship.

The EWC Fellowship offers a unique opportunity to experience the rich diversity of writers and writing at Emory and to acquire background and skills of lasting personal and professional value.

Eligibility:

To be considered for the fellowship, applicants must:

• be full time students in a doctoral program, in good standing both in the Graduate School and in their programs;
• be in candidacy at the time of application;*
• be in their 4th, 5th, or 6th year of graduate study at the time of application;
• not previously have held an advanced graduate student fellowship from Emory;
• be available to participate in a face-to-face interview during the week of February 16th.

* Last year, we extended some consideration to 4th year students who were unable to reach candidacy by the time of application for reasons that reflected structural constraints of their programs. We may extend similar considerations this year, by arrangement through DGSs.

The Emory Writing Center (EWC) Peer Tutor Application Guidelines For the 2009-2010 Year

Applications are due on February 27, 2009.

Who Peer Tutors Are and What They Do

Peer tutors are excellent writers who are trained to work with students desiring help with any stage of the writing process: generating ideas, constructing a thesis, structuring and revising drafts, and editing them for grammar and style, as well as summarizing, paraphrasing and citing sources. During their scheduled hours at the Writing Center, peer tutors meet one-on-one with students who have signed up for 30- or 60-minute conferences. Typically, a tutor reads a draft of an essay and helps the writer clarify ideas and discover the language and structure that will communicate them most powerfully to the intended audience.

Each year, the Writing Center employs 20 undergraduate peer tutors and 4 graduate fellows, who are specializing in 15-20 different disciplines; many are also proficient in languages other than English.

Tutors work six hours per week, are well paid, and gain valuable experience. Mandatory training workshops take place in August before the Writing Center opens. Further training occurs at the beginning of the spring semester and in weekly staff group meetings. As part of their work hours, tutors also participate in Writing Center projects, such as observing and reflecting on conferences, videotaping conferences, conducting workshops, or making presentations in classes.

***The Application Process***

In order to get everyone trained and ready for September when the Writing Center opens, we recruit and hire new tutors in the spring. To apply for a position as a peer tutor, students must first be nominated by a faculty member. The Director solicits nominations from selected faculty at the beginning of the spring semester, but students may also ask a faculty member to nominate them by sending a brief email to Dr. Ayer at dayer@emory.edu. Tutors are selected on the basis of a writing sample, recommendation, interview, and personal statement (described below). Because we have places for only 10-12 new tutors each year, the application process is competitive, and applicants should follow the guidelines very carefully.

Applications are due on February 27, 2009. Interviews will be conducted during the week of March 16th, just after Spring Break.
