Writing Center Policies
(Updated Fall 2009)

Because of increased demand for conferences, we have revised our operating policies so that we are able to help as many students as possible. Please review these policies carefully. If you have any questions, please ask the administrative office (404-727-6451).

Whom We Serve

Our first priority is to serve students enrolled in Emory College and the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. These students are welcome to use the Center at any time and can sign up for appointments online or by phone.

Undergraduate business majors may not bring papers for their business school classes to the Emory Writing Center, but should take these assignments to the Goizueta Business Writing Center. Undergraduates enrolled in Goizueta Business School may bring in papers for any classes they are taking in Emory College or the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences.

Professional school students may only use the Writing Center when we have room in the schedule to accommodate them. To find out whether an opening is available, call the administrative office (404-727-6451).

Scheduling Policies

One Hour Per Day
You may sign up for a maximum of one hour per day during the regular semester.
(During the last two weeks of the semester, you are allowed a maximum of 2 appointments per week. Visit this link for special “Final 14” policies.)

Call the Office to Cancel
Do not email your tutor to cancel appointments. If you need to cancel an appointment with less than 24 hours notice, call 404-727-6451 or email the Program Coordinator. Try to call by 4:00 p.m. the day before your appointment is scheduled; this will allow the administrative office time to delete your appointment so that another student may have the opportunity to meet with a tutor. There is no penalty for cancellations, but there is a penalty for no-shows (see below).

No-Shows
Students who are “no-shows” to their appointments, i.e. students who miss appointments without informing the Writing Center in advance, will receive a warning after the first time they “no-show.” After their second “no-show,” or any subsequent “no-shows,” students will be unable to use the Writing Center for two weeks from the date of their missed appointment. Students who call to cancel their appointments at the time of the appointment, or after it is due to begin, will be counted as "no-shows."

Late Arrivals
Please be on time! If you are more than 10 minutes late to your conference, you will be treated as a walk-in. That means a tutor will work with you if a) no other walk-ins arrived before you and b) the tutor has at least 20 minutes to work with you before his or her next scheduled appointment.

Walk-Ins
The Writing Center does not use waitlists. If you need an appointment when all tutors are booked, you may come to the Writing Center and wait for a slot to open because of a no-show or late arrival. Clients are given 10 minutes to make it to their session, and then their appointment is up for grabs.

Conference Policies

20-Minute Minimum
If the tutor does not have at least 20 minutes free to conduct the conference, he or she will not be able to help you. There’s simply not enough time to read a paper and provide substantive feedback in less than 20 minutes. (Remember, we are not a proofreading service!)

No Laptops
Please bring a hard copy of your paper to the writing center--or even better, bring two copies. Sorry, we cannot work from your laptop computer.

Take-Home Exams
1) Before bringing take-home exams to the center, you must obtain written permission from your instructor. It is the student’s responsibility to contact the instructor and secure his/her permission. Instructors should e-mail the Program Coordinator or the Director stating: their name, course title, and whether their permission extends to the entire class or only to a specific student. We will not help with a take-home exam until written permission is on file.

2) In the unlikely event that the tutor and the student are taking the same course, the tutor will arrange for the student to work with another member of the staff.

Again, these policies are in place so that the Writing Center can help as many students as possible. Thank you for your cooperation, and please remember to be courteous and respectful of your tutors and your fellow students.
