The Things They Carried by Tim O’Brien. It is one of the most brilliant books about writing that isn’t actually about writing I think there is.
What is your favorite word?
Describe a significant breakthrough in your development as a writer: The first semester of my freshman year was a significant time of growth in my writing. I was taking an intro to fiction class and psychology of fiction class, which both involved a ton of writing. I learned how I best organize my thoughts for different genres, namely fiction and essays. One of the biggest takeaways for me was that the act of writing was a sort of thinking in itself. I usually gained a new perspective when I wrote whatever I was thinking down, and if it sounded weird, I could revise it later. I believe writing what comes to your head, even if it is in small sporadic notes, will spark new thoughts and make for more original writing and ideas in general. That semester, I learned to be less reserved and conscientious of what I was writing in my first drafts, a lesson I apply to all disciplines.
