Kristin McFadden

Your name: Kristin McFadden

Your home town: Florence, SC

Your major(s): Anthropology with a minor in Global Health, Culture, and Society

Are you fluent in any language(s) other than English?

What are your career plans? I plan to pursue my Ph.D. in Cultural Anthropology with a focus in Legal Anthropology and hope to have a career in academia.

What is your favorite book or author and why?  My favorite book is Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston.  This book is my favorite because it explores the theme of love and specifically self- love in a way that challenges surface level understandings of what love is and how it plays a role in human life.

What is your favorite word?  My favorite word is epiphany.

Describe a significant breakthrough in your development as a writer:  For me, a significant breakthrough in my writing has been my ability to write at a high academic level without losing clarity. In my experience thus far in college, the more advanced one becomes in a subject area, the harder it becomes to maintain clarity for readers who might not have experience in that particular field. For me, this has mostly come about when using dense anthropological theory in my writing. What ultimately helped me to maintain clarity when working through dense theoretical concepts was to start my writing process with detailed outlines and end the process with more than one interactive close reading of the text where I talk about the ideas in the paper with a friend to gauge clarity.
