Bethany Morrison

Your name: Bethany Nanamaker Morrison

Your home town: Findlay, OH

Your major(s): I'm a Ph.D. candidate in the department of political science.

Are you fluent in any language(s) other than English?

Do computer coding languages count? :-)

What are your career plans?

I'm on track to become a professor of political science.

What is your favorite book or author and why?

Dead Man Walking by Sister Helen Prejean.  Or In Place of Justice by Wilbert Rideau. They remind me of what I believe and how I want to contribute to the world. Not to mention, they defy our assumptions about the dryness of non-fiction writing.

What is your favorite word?  Cephalopod is fun to say.

Describe a significant breakthrough in your development as a writer:  I've always done well in school. As a result, it never in crossed my mind to take advantage of the services that my university offered students such as the writing center or the subject librarians at the library. I figured this stuff out for myself in the past and that had always worked for me. That is, my grades were always fine. Finally, someone nagged and cajoled me enough times about "using the services that my fees pay for"that I made an appointment with the Graduate Student Writing Service here at Emory. It was a revolutionary moment. I had a deep, thoughtful and constructive conversation with someone who dedicated a little of his time to my writing. I didn't need to be drowning in order to ask for some help and some feedback. All of us can benefit from conversations with smart experienced people about our work.
