Jared Rothstein

Dean's Writing Center Fellow

Jared Rothstein holds a B.A. in Philosophy from Oklahoma State (2003) and an M.A. in Philosophy from Emory University (2007).  He is currently a doctoral student in Emory’s Philosophy department, working on his dissertation.  The focus of his project is the neuro-cognitive foundations of moral cognition.  Applying research from neural-network modeling of the brain, cognitive scientific study of conceptual structure, and evolutionary biology, Jared offers an account of ethical judgment and reasoning in which intuition and affect play a central role.  Other areas of interest include the relationship between the tragic and the comic, especially with regards to the absurd, Nietzsche and Existentialism, and philosophical themes in literature.  Having fully recovered from a variety of athletic injuries and accidents, two of which were nearly fatal—and all occurring in the past four years—Jared’s primary goal is to leave Emory with his health intact, if not his sanity.  In his spare time, he enjoys laughing, dancing and being merry—especially in good company, and preferably on the beach or poolside.  His favorite set of quotes:

“The unexamined life is not worth living.”

--Socrates

“The examined life is no picnic.”

--Robert Fulghum
